Cults Haunt the Marquis with Songs to the Ghost
August 11, 2024It’s hard to believe I’ve been listening to Cults – led by lead singer and original members Madeline Fallin and guitarist Brian Oblivion – since I caught them one sweltering, boiling hot, and humid night in Denver at the Larimer Lounge in August of 2011.
That night, Fallin belted out their hits from their first album “Cults” with the voice of a siren, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I don’t think I can even remember all the times I’ve seen them live. They played the Bluebird theater a number of times: 2012, 2013, and 2014. They also headlined the Underground Music Showcase in 2013. I finally got to photograph them professionally in the Velorama Music Festival in 2018. They then took a little break and released “Offering” in 2017 and “Host” in 2020 and now their latest album “To the Ghost” just dropped – right in time to showcase the new tunes for all of us.
Last Friday the small and intimate atmosphere of the Marquis provided an excellent backdrop for the latest tour. They of course came out with their staples Like “Go Outside” “You Know What I Mean” and “Alway Forever” but the youngness of the crowd brought a big smile to my face as the youngsters sang along with the old and the new material word for word.
It would be nice to see “Cults” stick around for another 10 or so years releasing new songs and albums for their adoring fans young and old. So after 13 years Cults has been very steady and consistent with their music and as long as Madeline and Brian stick together I’m sure they’ll continue to produce awesome music for their base over and over again for a while.
