Long known for its striking architecture, St. John’s Cathedral is now being seen in an entirely new light. On June 11, CELESTIA made its world premiere at the cathedral, transforming the historic landmark into an enchanting display of light and music unlike anything else currently in Denver.
Throughout the church, 25 projectors line the walls and work in sync with the music and lighting to create a 360-degree experience that combines storytelling and visuals across five incredible acts: Awakening, Becoming, Transformation, Belonging, and Radiance. Designed to be more than a visual spectacle, the show immerses the audience in a compelling journey while encouraging a sense of connection and community among its visitors.
Throughout the performance, scenes shift from twinkling, cloud-filled skies and rolling thunderstorms to dazzling displays of diamonds and gemstones stretching across the ceiling. Beautiful washes of color in shades of gold, white, and blue, along with vibrant rainbow hues, illuminate the altar and surroundings, bringing the cathedral to life.
As the visuals unfold, animals appear overhead and across the cathedral while light dances up and down the towering arches and beams. The 3D positional sound system enhances each scene, with sounds of water droplets falling from above, thunder echoing throughout, and bird calls traveling across the room as they appear to soar above. Together, these elements create an ethereal, dreamlike escape that feels perfectly at home within the timeless setting, drawing guests deeper into each moment. For a little while, the outside world seems to disappear.
Built in 1911, the church holds a unique place within the city, both geographically and historically, a factor that played a major role in shaping CELESTIA. “The building itself really compelled us into what we wanted to do,” says Sébastien Grenier-Cartier, Creative Content Producer with Normal Studio, who also credits a strong partnership with the cathedrals team for helping bring the vision to life.
Designed exclusively for the structure, every element was crafted to complement its grand architecture and historic interior. Rather than serving as a simple venue, the soaring arches and century-old details become an integral part of the performance itself.
The true beauty of it, too, is that everyone walks away with something different. For Sébastien, the story of CELESTIA is less about a traditional narrative and more about creating an emotional experience. Ultimately, he hopes guests enter “a new state of mind.”
With its wide-open narrative intentionally left to interpretation, the non-strict guidelines make the show feel limitless, allowing every audience member to create their own story within the presentation. Sébastien emphasizes that “this experience is for people of all beliefs, from people of all ages as well.” It’s an opportunity to connect with those around you, leave your troubles behind, and be transported into the vibrant, magical spaces and environments that CELESTIA delivers.
The most impressive part is the technical and production processes that bring this to life. With the designer and the creative team starting with scanning the building and creating a digital twin of it, they then went on to create their three elements: “visual, lighting, and music,” to make the masterpiece. Bringing those elements together was no small task. “We were here for about 6 weeks just to finalize everything,” Sébastien says.
The attention to detail extends to the music, featuring performances from a live choir and compositions by local Denver artists that add another layer to the production. Working in harmony with the projections, the soundtrack creates what Sébastien describes as “almost a tennis match between music and visuals.”
What lingers at the end of the show is a meaningful and inviting environment where guests can simply pause and take it all in. Organizers hope visitors leave with more than just memories of the projections. Instead, Sébastien says the experience encourages guests to “forget about life” for a moment, connect with those around them, and reflect on their takeaways. And that’s exactly what it did.
Whether you’re drawn by the technology behind it or simply looking for an unforgettable night out, it delivers an extraordinary blend of creativity and craftsmanship while offering something increasingly rare: the ability to inspire genuine awe. Throughout the production, the space becomes a place filled with beauty, curiosity, and moments that are difficult to forget.
Ambitious in scale yet deeply personal in its impact, CELESTIA leaves audiences with a lasting sense of wonder long after the final lights fade.
