Spoon, the veteran Rock band from the very musical city of Austin Texas came by the Mission Ballroom last Tuesday night to kick off their US tour in the RiNo District’s – and Denver’s – newest flagship venue. After 10 albums, they still rock like they’re young and alive, just hitting their stride. Their latest, “Lucifer on the Sofa,” released on Matador this year, took a while to record (thanks, COVID) but finally made it to shelves in February. It feels like it was worth the wait.
While the new tunes excited the crowd, it was so nice to listen to the old stuff, too – like my faves “Do You”, “I Got My Camera On,” and the classic “The Way We Get By.” Frontman Britt Daniel led the group with some high energy antics that belied the band’s age – and the members’, too. These tunes brought me back to some cool times in my life, and evidently did the same for many more fans in the packed house that night.
Geese – a brand-spankin’ new band form Brooklyn – opened the night with a rollicking post-punk set that really set the crowd in the right mood. Tuesday’s show was their first in Denver, but won’t be their last, if they keep this up. Be sure to catch them at the best Rocky Mountain festival of the year, the Underground Music Showcase, July 29-31 on South Broadway. You’ll be happy you did.
