2024 Musical Manifesto — Q2 Ripen the Spiritual Applet

2024 Musical Manifesto — Q2 Ripen the Spiritual Applet

It's still a BRAT summer this winter
It’s still a BRAT summer this winter.

As we teased in the Q1 article, Charli xcx was readying a Brat take over 2024 with her seminal album that dropped June 7, 2024. And with that we received cryptic messages of who she was talking about in some of the songs. Even better we received said subject matter joining her in songs like Girl, so confusing featuring Lorde. And there will be more to come throughout this and future playlists.

Check out Q1’s Manifesto here.

SWEAT tourmate Shygirl came in next with her collaboration with Boys Noize in Club Shy’s tell me. Then one of my favorite obscure tracks called Brat is by hardly exposed J Wax with vocalist LN. Maybe trying to get in on the hype, but the song pops with the repeated lines:

Brat:Nasty_JWax
Brat:Nasty – by JWax

personal trainer, equinox, sugar daddy, silver fox, noble lunch in a bento box,

I’m such a brat give it up

platinum card, louis vuitton, caviar, and st laurent

This next song came onto my feed and, honestly, it was so unique I wasn’t sure what it was all about. Hyped by Skrillex, the artist Varg2  with Bladee (another Charli linked artist) gave us Is there a place in heaven for boys like me? felt perfect for yogis.

The Blessed Madonna - Count On My Love
The Blessed Madonna – Count On My Love

Swimming Paul continued the slow roll out of fantastic songs with Vhs giving shoutouts to the Discord community. Continuing to share so many global sounds, Skrillex was joined by Hamdi, TAICHU, OFFAIAH, and contra on Push to amp things up. One of the strangest pairings – and best songs – was Flight Facilities joined by Enumclaw on Days of the Week. Count on My Love from The Blessed Madonna with Daniel Wilson and Kon had us making some noise for the Blessed one before they turned that shit off.

Magdalena Bay returned with a stunner in the concept album Imaginal Disk

You gonna jump if A.G. made it – Britpop from A.G. Cook with Charli xcx delivering vocals was one of my favorites. Then came the Charli remix of Von Dutch with Skream and Benga, which should have been on the remix album that was completely different but still Brat. Magdalena Bay returned with a stunner in the concept album Imaginal Disk and we featured the back to back Death & Romance and Fear, Sex in the bridge manner that Matthew and Mica do so well. (note: that dozen songs may be one of my favorite stretches of my playlists over the years)

Magdelena Bay - Imaginal Disk
Magdelena Bay – Imaginal Disk

Kygo with vocalist HAYLA changes the mood through Without You. Then we go right back to Charli for the Ending and Beginning of Brat (in MagBay style) as Obama’s fave 365 and my most played song of the year 360 come in. Vegyn with Ethan P. Flynn finishes the active segment and slows it down with Another 9 Days. aname takes us Anywhere (RoadTrippin’) then Caroline Polachek offers Starburned and Unkissed

Probably this timeframe of music had us jumping so much we added nearly another two dozen tracks. We need it now so here goes Jasper Tygner’s Eyes; SWIM with Condition; Fight It by heartaake; you and i by Wes Mills; and Oblivious from Carl Chaste were some of the ones that got us moving.

Back to Shy Girl for the track encore with Danny L Harle to keep Club Shy going. U_WANT by Machinedrum and Kučka weaves a nice melody around her voice. I CAN’T LOSE YOU by Confidence Man and The Hardest Part by Washed Out pair well in pain together, then Romy brings back the love with Always Forever. Favorites Disclosure and James Blake provide She’s Gone, Dance On and Thrown Around

Fred again… with BERWYN delivered the line “fuck the neighbors turn the music up”

How I Feel from 1-800-GIRLS was a favorite as summer approached. Favorite Vitesse X teased new music with Realize, then we get more Charli with Rewind, another one of the stellar tracks. Focus from Swimming Paul and Life by Jamie xx with Robyn got us moving one more round. Fred again… with BERWYN delivered the line “fuck the neighbors turn the music up” in BerwynGesaffNeighbours and that is what we did this year. Porij introduced themselves in You Should Know Me then Charli xcx hits us with i think about it all the time

These last two songs actually started the class playlist and if you are practicing, maybe you’ll try it that way. Fortnight (lofi remix) by The Remix Station and golden era covers Taylor Swift and Post Malone’s highly streamed track. And then Gracie Abrams shines on Close To You to finish us of in the first half of the year.

Look at the first quarter of the year here.
