2024 Musical Manifesto—Q1 Enter Carnelian Days
January 3, 2025We are back again for a review of the best songs of 2024 that were played in John Cargile’s power yoga classes and those that followed the trends of the best songs from around the world.
The first quarter 2024 playlist was named Enter Carnelian Days, calling out the songs that represent fiery warmth leading to creativity and joy.
Coming off a powerful 2023, Caroline Polachek starts the year’s manifesto in music with Butterfly Net featuring Weyes Blood lending additional vocals as a precursor to some future collaborations. Brittany Howard keeps delivering so many great varieties of song with Prove It To You. When You Need It by Assclap from Winnipeg still is a hidden gem with only 400-ish monthly listeners on Spotify, but hundreds of yogis have heard their songs in my classes.

Dance music jumped to the forefront of many of the dozen playlists put out this year. Pretty Girl brought her Emotional Dance Music out with All Away. Gorgon City, who was fantastic in the summer at Denver’s Regenerate Festival, steps up with Biggest Regret with Bbyafricka which ties the dance floor to heartache. One of my favorite albums was Smiling Through the Pain by Swimming Paul who dropped song after song like Lost that kept us dancing. A staple for many yoga teachers has been the varied output of Fred again…, and I couldn’t get enough of stayinit with Lil Yachty and Overmono. Keenan Mathias’ Closer To was a good introduction to this up and coming artist.
February 29 was when the world was served notice that a Brat Summer was on its way.
Charli xcx dropped Von Dutch with a insane music video (reminiscent of the Beastie Boys Sabatoge) and what followed was the album of the year, a multitude of remixes with collaborations across the globe, and a movement that nearly every music fan took part in.
Skrillex returned in more collaborations, like TAKA with Ahadadream, contra, and Priya Ragu seasoned with global beats. I cheated on the next song which was released in 2023, but I’m including it anyway because we partied a lot with it – KETA AND KRAWALL by Ikkimel and Barre. (I don’t drink any more but this homage to Captain Morgan gets me drunk).
obssessed by Olivia Rodrigo takes us all to psychological comparison with so much fun. (I can be your) Number One by J.Louix is a song that drops all pretension and finds searching for cred. I wanna see Ezra Collection, Sampa the Great, and Joy Anonymous perform JOY (Life Goes On) one day so we can dance all night. Safe In Your Arms by Eros for you is a fix for what many of us will need throughout the year. Vegyn with guest John Glacier delivered A Dream Goes On Forever which feels like the marching orders we needed this year – “The Sun Still Shines”.
As we do on these playlists, there is typically a chill song after an hour followed by some more songs. Starting the backside of the playlist comes Kelela’s Happy Ending remixed by A.G. followed by Nico de Andrea’s track with Sophia Bel Million Times from the album Love Therapy. We then get NICOLAS with Bisouxx delivering “feels like I touch the sky …” on INTO YOUR EYES to moving beats stirring the set. Long-time favorite Mall Grab joins Effy for iluv then Swimming Paul gets his second track on this list with Skrt.

ellis remixes Vandelux’s Tulum to take us to warmer spaces, then Logic1000 drops Can’t Let Go. Merry Lamb Lamb’s FOREVER gets treatment from Kareem Ali, while Self Tape makes the playlist with Tonight I’m With You.
The first quarter playlist ends with Erika de Casier’s Someone followed Vegyn with The Path Less Travelled as we chill until the boom hits.
