KKAAYYTTRRAA @ The Mission: 10 outta 10 on 10/10
October 13, 2024Oh my dayysss bro, Kaytranada is a living legend. What I would give to spend a day watchin this guy in the studio. After my boy Adi put me on a few years back, he’s gotta be one of my top 10 artists all time, maybe even top 5. He chefs up these JDilla-style house grooves that I think are unmistakably unique and inspiring. I’ve listened to his entire discography—including his SoundCloud edits—at least 10 times through.
And plenty must feel the same cause it felt like everyone and their mother pulled up to the venue early last night. Which honestly makes sense cause Channel Tres and Lou Phelps (Kaytra’s brother) opened the show. When Channel Tres performed “Joyful Noise” both line arrays started rattling; I don’t think he even knew how much subbass he put in that track.
Kaytra absolutely bodied The Mission with his new album TIMELESS, last night. I’m sure more devoted fans will disagree, but this record is no skips and 100% competes with Bubba for his unofficial best album. Although it may not carry the same level of flow from top to bottom, the lyrics hit on every track and I liked that he didn’t fall into the typical four on the floor house beat. And he didn’t jus play the new shit, I’m pretty sure he played every track wit 100M+ plays, so I can’t imagine anyone ubered home disappointed.
It’s true, you could prolly re-create this entire set in your bedroom, but there’s somethin about being in a crowd that makes it memorable. That might have been my top show of the year. I mean there isn’t much 2024 left, how could it get any better than that??
Track of the night: “Witchy” – Kaytranada & Childish Gambino
