Big Wildinnnn at Red Rocks
August 20, 2024
Aight what better way to start my journey than Big Wild at Red Rocks??? C’monnnnnnnn..
Back in my progressive house days I would blast “Empty Room” by Big Wild on repeat, but can’t say I’ve listened to anything of his since 2019 (dw not gonna say it). I really admire the unique Indie-EDM style he found, reminds me a bit of ODESZA’s early days (S/O to the Seatown legends). My understanding is that this tour was not part of his most recent Efferusphere Tour but I can’t confirm that with any level of certainty haha.
Pulling up to Red Rocks is an experience on its own. I’m sure for the CO-lifers out there, it’s just another Tuesday, but jeez it like an alien world man—the photos do not do this place justice. I can’t tell you the number of shows I’ve watched on YouTube of this place; it really does feel a bit like standing in history. And with Red Rocks only a half hour away from the city, I’m gonna be here all the time.
Both Poolside and Twen killed their openers, but I cannot give enough cred to Poolside cause they really showed out. I’d heard some of their records before but they definitely turned up the BPM/dBs for their live sets; electric guitar was definitely brought forward in the mix because at times it felt more like a rock set than a relaxed, summer band.
Big Wild showed upppp, and brought the whole team with him. There must have been 4 or 5 features throughout the night. For a moment there, while they brought out another feature, it felt like ODESZA’s again (which honestly makes sense because he’s on their label).
Can’t say I knew every song, but I was two steppin the whole time. His supporting band supporting band and routine made the performance really special. At one point he sang from the middle of the risers while standing in this massive flood light that shot up into the sky—so sickkkk. Gotta say the wildest part of the set (if it wasn’t a backing track) was his LIVE whistling during “Purple Sand (My Home)”—never seen anythin like that before. Great intro to Red Rocks and defo looking forward to being back here before the winter. Yeuh.
