Bikini Kill‘s tour was already a socially significant phenomenon, but could it have been planned at a better time? I doubt it. Now that we have a dynamic, intelligent, worthy, and deserving candidate in Kamala Harris leading what’s becoming a historic presidential election, the timing for a resurgence of some good old Riot Grrrl power – and, hopefully, a chance to create some new buzz too pass it on to the next couple generations – couldn’t be more perfect, or important

If you don’t know already, Bikini Kill front woman and provocateur Kathleen Hanna remains a pioneering figure in punk rock and feminist activism, and she’ll be bringing her iconic band to the Mission Ballroom tomorrow night, August 27. This highly anticipated tour not only marks a significant moment in music history but also underscores the enduring relevance of the Riot Grrrl movement that Bikini Kill helped to define.

This opportunity to witness Bikini Kill perform live at such a crucial time for feminism – for all of us – is now part of a cultural and political moment.

Hanna’s influence extends way beyond lead vocalist and songwriter of the band that made “Girls to the front!!” a rallying cry in many hardcore shows, creating a space to push the ever-present dickhead bros a little further back to mosh. One of the founders of the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 1990s, Hanna and Bikini Kill also played a crucial role in creating a space where feminist voices could be heard in the predominantly male punk rock scene. But Riot Grrrl became more than just a musical genre; it became a grassroots feminist movement that challenged the bro-centric rock ‘n roll status quo while advocating for women’s rights and social justice. Bikini Kill, with raw, unapologetic lyrics, high-energy live shows, and the constant call of “Girls to the front!” became the movement’s flagship band.

Bikini Kill Tickets still available – LFG!

Bikini Kill’s music is a powerful blend of straight-up punk rock, feminist politics, and DIY. Their first cassette “Revolution Girl Style,” followed by the eponymous debut EP (produced by Ian MacKaye), and the rest of their catalogue including “Pussy Whipped” and “Reject All American,” tackled issues ranging from sexual harassment and assault to body image and female empowerment. Hanna’s lyrics are sometimes intensely personal, full of true-story experiences and patriarchal frustrations, while articulating hugely relevant feminist concerns. Back in the day, Bikini Kill performances were electrifying, fierce, rebellious acts that resonated with audiences, galvanizing a generation of women to speak out and take action. And now it’s time to get the next generations involved.

Bikini Kill’s music provides a reminder of past struggles and a rallying cry to keep going, remain active, and in front.

This tour marks a continuation of Bikini Kill’s revival and dedication to spark more ongoing feminist influence. After they initially called it quits in 1997, the band reunited in 2019 to tour. The tour was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, and got plenty of critical acclaim, showing the message and music remain as relevant as ever – if not more so. Changes in the culture of the country – especially around reproductive freedom, trans rights, and women’s control of their own bodies (or lack of it) make this timing perfect, and our attention imperative.

Bikini Kill’s music provides both a reminder of past struggles with an increasingly dangerous patriarchy, and a rallying cry to keep going, remain active, and in front. Bikini Kill is still a powerful force in the fight for women’s rights, and this tour is should be looked at as a symbol of resilience and progress.

This opportunity to witness Bikini Kill perform live at such a crucial time for feminism – for all of us – is now part of a cultural and political moment. The energy in the room promises to be electric, fierce. This show promises to be a testament to the power of punk rock to bring people together, to inspire change, and to create moments and movements of unity and solidarity. Punk Rock ain’t dead.
