It’s been a while since I’ve been to the Historic Ogden Theater. It’s also been a long time since I last caught the Silversun Pickups at a show.

Out of Los Angeles, Silversun Pickups has been together since 2000, and they released their first EP “Pikul”  in 2005. The four-piece still features Brian Aubert on guitar and vocals, Nikki Monninger – sporting her trademark “sparkly slippers” – on bass, drummer Christopher Guanlao, and Joe Lester on Keyboards, their longest-lasting lineup. I am amazed at how talented and consistent this band has been over the years.

Silversun Pickups just released their newest album last June called “Widow Weeds,” and they played much of that record over about ninety minutes in front of a whack crowd at the Ogden. To that crowd’s delight, they performed “Freakazoid,  “Neon Wound,” and “It Doesn’t Matter Why” from the new album.

They also play a ton of other faves like “The Pit,” “Circadian Rhythm,” and more before they ended our night with “Lazy Eye.” Silversun Pickups’ music live show showcased their huge sound just right. I could clearly hear every note coming out of Brian Aubert’s guitar, while Nikki Monninger pounded on the bass in line with Guanlao’s machine-like drumming – though it could be his thrashing hair that kept the beat. Meanwhile, Joe Lester added his signature keyboards to make that classic Silver Sun Pickup sound come alive.
