#UMS2018 Day 2 – Hour-By-Hour Slew of Music for You
July 28, 2018You’ve had your introduction to the West’s (and probably the world’s) best local festival, and have hopefully taken our suggestions to heart to guide you through Day One. On to Day Two – where you’ll find yourself getting more and more familiar with the underground, and really get a glimpse of your city’s music scene, from the inside. Once again, we’re offering up our best bets, and not only because choices tripled between days. We want you to not only have an excellent experience, but we also want to help you discover some gems in our city that you may not have known existed before this magical weekend.
And – on that note:
Here’s the DenverThread hour-by-hour lineup for Day 2, Saturday, July 28
12:20 p.m. | Saturday |
---|---|
Super Secret Underground Thingy – Imagination Stage @ Import MechanicsThis act may just send you packing after it’s over, fully sated for another weekend, completely blowing away anything you’ve seen up to this moment and fundamentally changing your worldview forever, as well as the chemical makeup of your ever-loving brain. Or, it might just be The Scorpions. |
|
1:00 p.m. | |
Curta – Blue Ice LoungeI’d call this a new shade of hip hop, if it wereen’t so much more. A veteran of Denver’s once-thriving DIY scene, Curta is smart, sassy, sarcastic, and beautiful music. Another Brilliant Option: Blind Date/Whose Song is it Anyways Game Show @ Irish RoverSomewhere between a game-show-styled improv event and a key party where you get to watch. You’ll have to be there…. |
|
1:20 p.m. | |
Rubedo – Main Stage @ GoodwillSmooth indie pop with loud guitars. Complex, but not slippery; smart, but not mysterious. Probably a great summer afternoon band to make it easy to start off your buzz. |
|
2:00 p.m. | |
Bets – The Hi DiveWho ever thought mixing a distinctly british-sounding pop style with an almost ambient-smooth shoegaze would be any good, at all? Well, Bets did – and she was right. And then she recorded her own version of the most seminal album in history, 1983’s “Violent Femmes.” Go figure (but listen while you do the math). |
|
2:20 p.m. | |
The Velveteers – Sesh Stage @ Fentress ArchitectsGet your White Stripes-meets-Zeppelin fix from this Boulder duo on the Sesh stage. If the sun’s not hot enough to singe your eyebrows yet, these stoney guitar riffs will get it done. |
|
3:00 p.m. | |
Super Bummer – Skylark LoungeGet your afternoon rolling with this surfy-punk trio, pulling in a little Pixies and Modest Mouse, and enough reverb to boogie board onto the stage. |
|
4:00 p.m. | |
Woodhouse – The HornetStraight up ’70s-sounding alt-country rock, fit to fulfill your Fleetwood Mac/Heart meets Bobby Bare mood, Woodhouse brings oodles of soul from the plains into the city. |
|
4:20 p.m. | |
Jeff the Brotherhood – Main Stage @ GoodwillIf you aren’t familiar yet, this is your chance to catch these Nashville brothers in the flesh. Melding a little Cheap Trick with Black Keys with just the right punch of classic rock, this brotherhood will deliver the rock directly to your soul. A Brilliant Alternative: Brothertiger – Imagination Stage @ Import MechanicsMaybe your day is ready for some ChillWave, á la Washed Out. Maybe it’s not. |
|
5:00 p.m. | |
Rotten Reputation– The Hi Dive Fucking fantastic, in your face, gob-hocking punk rock, perfect for old-fashined slam dancing. Bringing you enough X-Ray Spex and Exploited to thrust you back into your early ’80s teens (or your parents’)! Another Briliant alternative: The Dollhouse Thieves – S. Broadway Christian ChurchSoft music built on American standards, smooth enough to calm your frayed ends. |
|
5:20 p.m. | |
Gang Gang Dance – Imagination Stage at Import MechanicsBeats, electronics, shoegaze, Brooklyn from the early aughts. Bring a little brittle echo and dance into your afternoon. |
|
6:00 p.m. | |
Pelvis Presley– Banded Oak Brewing Raw distortion, oozing sex, raw vocals, rowdy samples and loops, raw hips. this one’s dangerous. Did we say “raw”? Another Briliant alternative: Princess Dewclaw – The Hi DiveRaw punk rock, kinda like Runaways. Only they stayed here to tickle you. |
|
7:00 p.m. | |
Cheap Perfume– The Hi Dive Damn! More brilliant, drag-you-back-to-Bum-Kon punk rock, straight outta Colorado! Angry kids with a lot to fight for, and more to say about it – somehting we all need. Another Briliant alternative: Animal Electricity – Gary Lee’s Motor Club & GrubFurious and strong rock n’ roll, if you’re still scared of the punks. |
|
8:00 p.m. | |
Bluebook– Denver Public Library This duo books themselves as “Apocalyptic Lounge,” and we wholeheartedly agree. Think Opal, or The Warm Inventions, and sleeeeeep…. Another Brilliant alternative: Coastal Wives – Illegal Pete’sLight, experimental, danceable. And distinctly tingling. |
|
9:00 p.m. | |
Shuttles– Moe’s Original BBQ Great indie rock, multi-layered and fun. But not too layered – but way too fun. Another Brilliant alternative: In/Planes – Illegal Pete’sAmerican doo-wop duo with the real deal in mind. |
|
10:00 p.m. | |
Dear Rabbit– The Hornet There’s no-one quite like Dear Rabbit, except possibly a Lou Reed at 18, with all of Reed’s experience, heroin, and life under the belt. Another Brilliant alternative: Pout House – Gary Lee’s Motor Club & GrubI can’t stop hearing Blondie in this band – and I can’t stop loving that! |
|
11:00 p.m. | |
Gun Street Ghost– Moe’s Original BBQ Longtime local heros, the members of Gun Street Ghost play a sweet & intense brand of Americana. Smokey & true, frantic and assured. Another Brilliant alternative: Cities of Earth – Denver DistilleryGet your Blade Runner fix over a sipping whiskey. |
|
12:00 a.m. | Sunday |
Wheelchair Sportscamp– Gary Lee’s Motor Club & Grub Likely the most important band in Denver at the moment, and some of the state’s best hip-hop. You want to stay up and aware for this set. |
|
1:00 a.m. | Sunday |
The Corner Girls– 3 Kings Tavern Pastel punk – maybe that’s true – but these musicians are strong, savvy, smartass women with something to say. Now you better listen. Another Brilliant alternative: Git Some – The Hi DivePost-Hardcore? Maybe. Screamo? Possibly. The heart of our world, screaming in its last, desperate howl to be rescued from this human infection? Definitely. |
