On a crisp September evening, the Gothic Theatre in Denver was buzzing with anticipation as the indie sensation Joywave took the stage. Hailing from Rochester, NY, the band, known for their eclectic sound and quirky aesthetics, delivered a performance that had the crowd enthralled from start to finish.
Dressed in matching green outfits, a nod to their “Permanent Pleasures” album cover, Joywave set the tone for the night with a backdrop featuring a rotating napping cat—a playful, surreal image that perfectly encapsulated the band’s vibe. The set kicked off with “Obsession,” a fan favorite, immediately pulling the packed house into their world. The energy in the room was palpable as they transitioned through a mix of older hits and fresh material, including new tracks like “Graffiti Planet,” “Brain Damage,” and “Sleepy Time Fantasy.”
Joywave, formed in 2010, has steadily built a loyal following, thanks in part to their collaborations with Big Data’s Alan Wilkis, most notably on the hit “Dangerous.” Lead singer Daniel Armbruster, whose distinct vocals have become synonymous with the band’s sound, was in top form. He was joined by original members Joseph Morinelli on guitar and Paul Brenner on drums, both of whom delivered performances that underscored the tight, cohesive nature of the group.
A standout moment of the evening came when Armbruster shared an amusing story about receiving an email from a fan who promised to attend the show dressed as a banana if they played “Traveling at the Speed of Light.” True to his word, the fan appeared in full costume, much to the delight of the band and the audience—a quirky, memorable moment that highlighted the band’s strong connection with their fans.
The setlist was a well-curated journey through Joywave’s discography, featuring tracks like “Tongues,” “Somebody New,” and “Destruction.” The crowd sang along to every word, particularly during the Big Data cover “Dangerous,” which added a nostalgic touch to the night. Each song was delivered with precision and passion, showcasing the band’s growth and their ability to keep things fresh while staying true to their roots.
Overall, Joywave’s performance at the Gothic Theatre was nothing short of spectacular. The band’s blend of humor, energy, and musicianship made for a truly unforgettable evening. The Denver crowd, clearly knowledgeable and deeply appreciative, left the venue buzzing with the afterglow of an amazing show. Joywave, once again, did not disappoint.
